Comparing Polished, Honed And Pitched Finishes On Memorials

1.The Polishing Process for High Gloss
The polished finish is the most popular choice for granite memorial finishes. It creates a mirror-like, reflective surface that enhances the stone's natural color and veining. The process involves grinding the granite with progressively finer diamond abrasive pads, starting from coarse 50-grit and moving up to 3000-grit or higher. A final buff with oxalic acid or tin oxide powder produces the signature wet-look shine. Polished surfaces make inscriptions and laser etchings stand out with sharp contrast, especially on black granite like Absolute Black. However, the high-gloss surface can show fingerprints, water spots, and smudges more visibly than other finishes. For cemetery monuments, polished finishes are ideal for upright headstones and kerbset top slabs where families want a dignified, formal appearance. Some customers would prefer the polished finish for whole monument including the carving part. We share a polished lily monument for your reference.

2. Honed Finishes for Matte Aesthetics

The honed finish offers a smooth, flat surface without the reflective shine of polishing. To achieve a honed surface, manufacturers stop the grinding process at 200-400 grit, before the final buffing stage. The result is a velvety, matte texture that feels soft to the touch. Honed granite memorial finishes are increasingly popular for contemporary monument designs and Asian-inspired memorials. They hide fingerprints, water marks, and light scratches much better than polished stone. However, honed granite is slightly more porous than polished granite, meaning it can absorb oils and dark liquids if not sealed properly. For pitched edge headstones that combine multiple finishes, the honed face provides a modern contrast to rough-cut edges. For monuments, customers mainly choose Honed 500 grit or Honed 800 grit. As a creative monument manufacturer, we design different categories of monuments for customers choice every year to help them diversify the products. This is an example of our angel headstone design; we make the headstone in honed finish as the background with polishing oval panel in front for wording. This headstone design features an angel standing beneath a cherry blossom tree with petals gently falling. The scene is calm and atmospheric, evoking a deep sense of serenity and eternal peace.

3. Rustic Pitched Edges for Natural Look
The pitched edge finish is completely different from polished or honed surfaces. Instead of mechanical abrasion, a pitched edge is created by splitting the granite with a chisel along the stone's natural grain. This produces a rough, irregular, and textured edge that resembles natural bedrock. When used on headstone borders or base slabs, pitched edge headstones evoke a rustic, hand-carved, or "fieldstone" aesthetic. Many families choose pitched edges for natural burial grounds or woodland cemeteries where polished monuments would feel out of place. The pitched edge also provides excellent grip for lifting stones during installation. Retailers often combine a polished face with pitched sides and back, offering the best of both worlds: easy-to-read inscriptions on the front with a rugged, organic perimeter. Here is an example of an angel monument to show the headstone has the rustic pitched background with the polished scroll panel in front for inscription with standing angel on the side.

4. How Finishes Affect Maintenance

Different granite memorial finishes require different levels of ongoing care. Polished surfaces need occasional cleaning with a mild granite cleaner and a microfiber cloth to restore shine. Acidic cleaners or vinegar will etch the polish permanently. Honed surfaces are lower maintenance but require a penetrating granite sealer applied every 2-3 years to prevent stain absorption. For pitched edge headstones, the rough texture does not show dirt or lichen growth as easily, but the crevices can collect organic debris. A soft brush and water once per year is usually sufficient. When exporting memorials, we advise our wholesale and retail clients to choose the suitable finish according to their local climate. Polished finishes perform well in dry regions, honed surfaces work best in covered columbarium, and pitched edges are ideal for high-rainfall areas where slipping on wet polished stone is a liability concern.
