
1. Weight Distribution in 20ft Containers
Proper weight distribution is the most critical factor when loading stone memorials into containers. A standard 20ft container has a maximum payload of approximately 28 metric tons, but the floor's point-load capacity is often the limiting factor. Granite monuments are dense ---- a single upright headstone can weigh 200 to 500kg, while kerbset components can exceed 1,000kg. The loading strategy must center the heaviest pieces directly over the container's steel cross-members, not on the corrugated floor panels between them. We recommend placing the heaviest monuments (large canopy roofs or double kerbsets) in the center of the container, with lighter plaques and flat markers distributed toward the front and rear. Total container weight should never exceed 26 tons to allow a safety margin for weight fluctuations. 2. Securing Wooden Crates
Every granite piece must be packed in sturdy wooden crates before container loading. For loading stone memorials, we use export-grade plywood crates with internal foam padding or corrugated cardboard separators to prevent stone-to-stone contact. Each crate is designed to fit snugly within the container's width, leaving minimal gaps for movement. During loading, crates are placed in an interlocking pattern ---- similar to brickwork ---- to create a self-supporting wall. Heavy crates go on the bottom layer, lighter crates on top. Steel strapping bands are applied around each crate, and wooden wedges are hammered between crates and container walls to eliminate shifting. After we finish loading, we will send loading photos to our customers showing which crates go where, as this helps with the unloading process. Proper crate securing reduces damage claims significantly, especially for ocean voyages where rough seas can cause sudden container movement.

3. Moisture Protection During Transit
Granite is naturally low in porosity, but moisture exposure during transit can cause two serious issues: rust staining from metal fixtures and mold growth on wooden crates, which can transfer onto polished surfaces. Our moisture protection protocol begins with wrapping each stone in high-grade polyethylene sheeting before crating. Desiccant bags (silica gel) are placed inside each crate to absorb any humidity that penetrates during the voyage. The container itself is lined with waterproof kraft paper or vapor barrier film along the floor and side walls. For monument container shipping destined for tropical or humid ports, we recommend adding an extra layer of shrink-wrap around the entire loaded container's interior before sealing the doors.

4. Unloading Safety for Distributors
Safe unloading is the final phase of loading stone memorials, and it requires advance planning. Each crate in the container should be labeled with its weight, piece name (e.g., "Headstone A," "Base Slab"), and a handling instruction sticker. Heavy crates (over 200kg) require forklifts with sufficient lifting capacity ---- ideally 2.5-ton capacity machines. Forklift operators must approach the container from the rear doors only, and the container should be placed on level ground before unloading begins. For top-loaded lighter crates, manual unloading with proper lifting straps is acceptable, but workers should wear steel-toe boots and gloves. We provide a printed unloading sequence chart showing the order in which crates should be removed to prevent unbalanced loads from tipping remaining crates.
