Differences between Chinese and Western stone carvings

Jun 06, 2023

There is a fundamental difference in the public's perception of them
In the West, stone carving practitioners are referred to as stone carvers, who are seen as part of the same group as painters and artists, while in China, stone carving practitioners are referred to as craftsmen, who have a low social status and are only referred to as ordinary practitioners, even rough workers. With the influx of Western stone carving, these stone carving practitioners were recognized, and stone carving was listed as an important component of art. It was only then that the status of Chinese stone carvers was elevated, and the public's recognition of stone carvers was increased. This is one of the reasons why Western stone carvings differ from Chinese stone carvings.
From a practical perspective
In modern times, although Chinese stone carvers and Western stone carvers have very similar creative forms, their social responsibilities are vastly different. In China, stone carvers are still part of the traditional division of labor, with their main responsibilities being to sculpt temples and carve stones for buildings. On the one hand, they do not have the freedom to create independently.
In terms of the object of expression, the space in which the work is located, etc
Their works lack the ability to intervene in social reality. In the West, stone carvings freely created in "studios" can express their observations of society through their works, and their power is no less than that of contemporary painters. Western stone carvings that receive orders from various parties and profit from them can enter various public spaces in modern society, such as squares, streets, and parks. Their works naturally attract public attention. This is also another reason why Western stone carvings differ from Chinese stone carvings.
