Sandblasting Techniques For Headstone Lettering And Artwork

Sandblasting Daffodil Headstone

1. Preparation and Stencil Cutting
Professional sandblasted headstone lettering begins with precise stencil preparation, not the blasting nozzle. The process starts by designing the inscription layout on CAD software, then cutting a rubberized stencil material (typically photoresist or hand-cut vinyl) using a plotter or laser. The stencil is carefully applied to the polished granite surface after thorough cleaning with alcohol to remove oils and dust. Intricate artwork, such as floral borders or religious symbols, requires multi-layer stencils to achieve different depths in the same design. For monument engraving, the stencil's adhesive quality is critical ---- any gap allows abrasive material to leak under the mask, creating blurred letters or "halo" effects. As a manufacturer, we will provide sample stencil cuts for our wholesaler and retailer customers before they approve large orders.

2. Depth Control in Sandblasting

Achieving consistent depth is the most challenging aspect of sandblasted headstone lettering. The process uses compressed air to propel aluminum oxide or silica sand at high velocity through a nozzle, eroding exposed granite. Depth control depends on three variables: nozzle pressure (typically 80–120 PSI), abrasive flow rate, and dwell time (how long the blast stays in one area). Shallow letters (1–2mm deep) are common for budget monuments, while premium inscriptions reach 4–6mm depth for dramatic shadow effects. Our skilled operators use graduated blasting ---- starting with lower pressure for fine details, then increasing pressure for deep lettering. For monument engraving on hard granites like Absolute Black, longer blasting times are required compared to softer stones like grey G654. A depth gauge should be checked every 10 minutes during production to ensure uniformity across the entire headstone. A key feature of this Sandblasting Daffodil Headstone is the floral decoration on both sides of the upright scroll. The daffodil pattern is completed through precise sandblasting, creating a soft sawn texture that contrasts naturally with the polished finish.

3. Adding Color to Engraved Letters
Color transforms engraved letters from subtle shadows into bold statements. After sandblasting, the carved recesses are cleaned of dust using compressed air and a stiff brush. Paint ---- typically oil-based lithochrome or acrylic monument paint ---- is applied by hand using fine-tipped brushes or syringes for small letters. Excess paint on the polished surface is wiped away with a razor blade or specialized solvent before the paint cures. Popular colors include black (for light granites), white (for dark granites), gold, silver, and even custom-mixed shades. For sandblasted headstone lettering exposed to harsh sunlight, UV-resistant paints are essential to prevent fading within 3–5 years. Some cemeteries restrict certain paint colors, so we advise our wholesaler and retailer clients to check local regulations before applying gold or red lettering. The characteristic of this Bahamian blue custom letter design tombstone is a semi-circular top, elegantly deep sandblasted, engraved with the letters "In Loving Memory" and complex ivy leaves. The edge of the tombstone has beautiful carvings, making the design look even more beautiful. The Bahamian blue custom engraving complements the smooth and polished surface of the tombstone, giving it a clean and elegant appearance.

4. Longevity of Sandblasted Inscriptions
Properly executed monument engraving can last for centuries because the lettering is physically carved into the stone rather than printed on the surface. However, longevity depends on three factors: engraving depth, granite density, and environmental exposure. Deep engravings (4mm+) survive acid rain and freeze-thaw cycles much better than shallow 1mm letters. Dense granites like Black Galaxy resist erosion significantly longer than marble or limestone. Even the painted fill can be reapplied after 10–20 years without re-engraving the stone. For export shipments, we recommend specifying a minimum 3mm depth for all sandblasted headstone lettering destined for cold climates, where ice formation inside shallow letters can cause spalling. Before we produce the bespoke memorials, we will suggest our customers discuss and educate their end customers that a well-sandblasted granite headstone will remain legible longer than any other memorial material available today. Here is an example of the bespoke memorial combined with skilled sandblasting details.
